The Musical Firs
Val di Fiemme is the place where fir trees are turned into music.
There is a forest in Paneveggio where music grows with the trees: it’s known as the Violin Forest, or the Stradivarius Forest.
The forest’s reputation is down to a unique fir spruce that has been growing in our mountains for centuries and holding music within its timber. The high-quality wood is used by luthiers the world over, to create the soundboards which guitars, violins and other fine musical instruments are made from.
In October 2018, storm Vaia altered and radically changed the landscape. The indiscriminate violence of the wind brought thousands of trees to the ground as if they were skittles, leaving deep wounds in the forests of Val di Fiemme and especially in the Paneveggio forest. At first it was thought that everything had been destroyed, but with careful forestry planning, reconstruction and restoration work has already begun and the Violin Forest will soon be returned to its former glory.
Choose the best place to lie down and watch the sky and the clouds playing hide-and-seek in the tree branches, while the fresh scent of resin rises up your nostrils and the gentle rustle of the branches whispers in your ears.
