The Predazzo Volcano and Porphyry Quarries
The geological variety of Val di Fiemme.
Volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and atmospheric events have made the Fiemme area a place rich in history and valuable resources.
The geological history of Val di Fiemme tells us that 230 million years ago, the area that today makes up the Cima Viezzena and the Latemar Group was once a cone of calcareous sediments with a base 10-15 kilometres in diameter, whose summit, located between today’s Monte Mulat and the town of Predazzo, reached 5,000 metres.
Walking along the geological path of Doss Capèl (2,264 metres), the detail can be seen in the intrusive and effusive rocks that outcrop the central area of the former Predazzo volcano, as well as the mineralisation phenomena that gave rise to the Bedovina copper and tungsten deposit.
The layers of volcanic rock have been perfectly preserved in the Bletterbach area, and the park and the Canyon will take you on a fascinating journey into the interior of the mountains, the world of rocks and the history of the Dolomites.
Val di Fiemme is an area rich in materials such as porphyry and granite. Due to their unique strength and hardness, these natural stones formed from sedimentary rocks are quarried and processed for use in flooring, hygiene fixtures, and home and outdoor accessories.
